Recreational Table Tennis Paddles

We just put the finishing touches on the rec room in our basement, and can now look forward to spending hours down there watching movies, listening to music, and playing ping pong. Ping pong is actually the biggest draw for us, as we all love the game and are quite competitive about it. My sons can’t wait to invite all their friends over for tournaments — which is just fine by me. I’d much rather have them hanging around our house with their buddies than roaming around town getting into trouble! But now I have to stock up on recreational table tennis paddles so everyone can take a turn at playing.

There’s really not much to buying a table tennis paddle, particularly when it’s just meant for casual use. I certainly don’t have to worry about which ones are better for strong offensive players who like to put a lot of spin on the ball or for defensive players who prefer lightweight equipment for quicker strikes. All I want are table tennis paddles that will hold up to the use and abuse that teenage boys are likely to dish out — which means I can’t just go with the cheapest ones I can find. But I figure that paying a bit extra for a slightly higher quality product at the outset will save me money in replacement fees in the long run, so I’m willing to do this.

Anyway, I went to a couple of national sporting goods chains in my area, but they just stocked low-end table tennis paddles that looked like they might snap in half upon contact. No thanks! So I started looking around at some online stores and found a much better selection available. Sure, these websites still had the $5.95 sandpaper models for sale, but they also had some very good mid-range products as well as some top-tier professional table tennis paddles that cost over $150.

After reading through a bunch of descriptions, I settled on a table tennis paddle that seemed perfect. It wasn’t too heavy or too light, could accommodate a bunch of different playing styles, and had very good reviews from customers. This particular table tennis paddle was quite affordable, so I decided to buy 10 of them to keep in the basement for whoever needs them during our gatherings.

I have always wanted to have a cool rec room where my family can spend quality time together, and now that dream is finally a reality. I’m looking forward to grabbing a table tennis paddle in one hand, a cold beer in the other, and smacking the ball around while laughing and talking with my boys. I don’t think there’s a better way than that to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Military History

It is often said that the history of armed conflict is as old as human history itself. Whether or not this is true, we do know that military history stretches back millennia. It seems that as soon as their were tribes big enough to muster an army and technology to make weapons, there was armed war between them. Although a lot of the people who study this stuff are armchair generals and war hawks, it is useful information to have no matter what your political persuasion is. Whether you believe in the necessity of armed conflicts, or feel that, one day, we can transcend all of this violence and live a more peaceful existence, you can learn a lot by studying why and how nations make war on each other.

One of the most interesting aspects of military history is how completely it is driven by individual egos. A lot of the time, we are taught both ancient and modern history as if it is the rational decisions of states and their leaders. We are taught to think that governments go to war for ideological, political, and territorial reasons, but we very rarely see the role that vanity plays in this. Taking a close look at military history teaches us that, in fact, often wars are fought simply because of the territorial aspirations of one particular leader. Even more disturbingly, sometimes it is just a matter of a King feeling the need to prove himself to his peers.

This is not to say that there is no more to military history than rich folks making war on each other. Obviously, there is a lot more to it. One aspect of it that I never expected to find interesting has since come to captivate my imagination: the actual history of warfare. The way that one simple innovation in technology can lead one group of people to completely dominate the other and change the course of world civilization itself is fascinating. Whether it is the horse, gunpowder, longbow, nuclear weapons, or what have you, one scientific breakthrough can make the difference between otherwise evenly matched foes.

Although I started studying military history fairly late in life, it would have been better for me to start earlier. In high school, I was targeted heavily by recruiters because I lived in a minority community. Some of my friends enlisted in the military without knowing very much about it, while others flat-out rejected it without really looking into it. I feel like It would’ve been better for both groups if they had known more about what they were being asked to participate in.

You needn’t be a gourmet cook to create gourmet soups!

When you think of gourmet food, do you think of your favorite fancy restaurant, or your neighbor, a highly experienced cook? Most people do. However, it’s not necessary to know every little thing about cooking in order to create gourmet soups. Soup is a dish that lends itself to experimentation. All you really need are a few gourmet ingredients, fresh seasonings and your imagination. You’ll be amazed at the tasty results. Let’s take a look at some easy techniques that even the novice cook can use with astonishing success.

Just about any food that you regard as gourmet is a candidate for soup. Here are some foods that work well in gourmet soup creations. Crab (or Krab(TM), shrimp, clams, oyster, salmon and other firm fleshed fish are great flavor additions for soup. Portobello mushrooms, along with any or all of the exotic dried mushrooms are also excellent flavor enhancers in soup. When using dried mushrooms that require soaking in water to reconstitute, be sure to add that water to the pot.

Other ingredients may not strike you as gourmet foods, but add gourmet flavor, nonetheless. For example, lightly cooked bacon, cut in bite sized pieces, adds exotic flavor to an ordinary chowder. Make your own list of gourmet foods and choose several that you think will go together well on your palate. Most people can do this intuitively. Give it a try and see for yourself just how taste smart you actually are.

One technique common to gourmet dishes is a layered approach, which produces complexity of taste. For example, if you marinate your shrimp prior to adding it to your soup, the flavor imparted to the soup becomes a pleasing, nuanced taste your guests can’t quite put their finger on. This technique is what adds complexity to a gourmet soup dish. Another example of introducing this layered effect is to caramelize onions before adding them to the soup pot. The onions are no longer ordinary onions, diced up and tossed in. The caramelization changes the depth and character of the onion’s flavor, adding yet another dimension to the finished dish. Smoked meats and seafood are yet another way to add that gourmet flavor.

When considering your seasonings, it’s good to have a seasoning chart to help you pair foods perfectly with herbs and spices. A book of marinades and seasoning mixtures will also boost your gourmet soup’s success. If you don’t want to buy these guides, just look online for hundreds of such charts and herb recipes.

You needn’t stuff your stockpot with an all gourmet lineup. Don’t neglect some of the more ordinary ingredients. White mushrooms, corn, bell peppers and water chestnuts add variety of texture, another component of a gourmet soup.

For a first effort, make a small quantity of soup to see if you like the results. Tweak the seasonings and add or subtract ingredients until you get your perfected gourmet soup. It’s easier than you think!

The rich history, and the many current-day variations of the Puerto Rican flag

If you’ve ever thought that we here in the United States are somewhat flag-crazy, think again. You’ve seen political rallies, speeches and debates by politicians and candidates, standing at a podium with up to sixteen (that’s as many as I’ve counted to date) large American flags standing proudly behind the speaker. Although you might think just one would be enough, multiple flags are the current trend. However, every single one of the flags looks the same! There is just one version.
Although the variety of Puerto Rican flags dates back centuries, beginning with Christopher Columbus laying claim to the island in 1492, there have probably been more iterations of flags on Puerto Rican soil than you would imagine. There was the flag of Spain, as well as other approved Spanish versions in green and burgundy, mainly indicating military might and installations.
In a brief and unsuccessful revolutionary movement, in 1868, to free Puerto Rico from Spanish rule, a revolutionary-minded woman knitted yet another new design for the Puerto Rican flag, sporting a yellow star on the upper left portion.
The last Spanish flag to fly on Puerto Rico was issued in 1873. Following the Spanish American war, in 1898, Puerto Rico became a U.S. possession.
The U.S. decided to end this excess flaggery, deeming it a felony to display anything but the United States flag. However, when Puerto Ricans elected their first governor in 1948, this Puerto Rican governor successfully installed the current, official Puerto Rican flag, in 1952, flown to this day – with a few variations.
This flag consists of five alternating bands of red and white. At the left side, is a blue triangle with a five-pointed, white star inside the triangle. Unlike most flags, the shade of blue used is not consistent amongst flag manufacturers. Among citizens flying the Puerto Rican flag, you may observe one with a pale blue triangle, while others use a dark blue shade, similar to the blue on the American flag. These are not mistakes by the flag makers. The home flying the flag with the pale blue shade indicates that the occupants support an independent Puerto Rico. Those who desire statehood have flags with the dark blue triangle. Essentially, the citizens are making a sort of veiled political statement, not commonly found in any other country.
Nonetheless, there are several other Puerto Rican flags, used during political rallies and such as a show of unity and numbers of adherents.
As if a dozen versions weren’t enough, every municipality in Puerto Rico has their own flag as well. These municipalities are akin to towns, so you can imagine the confusion to visitors at a Puerto Rican parade!
In addition, you may see the Taino tribal national Puerto Rican flag, representing the original native inhabitants in the pre-Columbian regions of the island.

Underwater Welding

My good friend Mike has never been able to hold a job for long. Although he is an interesting and intelligent guy, he’s a little bit flighty. He gets bored of something almost as soon as he starts it, and as a result he has switched jobs a number of times. He has good intentions, but the follow-through is not there.

That is why when he first told me that he had an underwater welding job, I was little bit skeptical. Jobs in underwater welding are very difficult and very dangerous, and I didn’t think he would stick with it for very long. The pay was excellent – everyone knew that – but the work involved long hours and high risks. It seemed like the kind of thing he would try a brief adventure in and get sick of.

When six months later he was still an underwater welder, however, I became curious about it. I asked a little bit about the underwater welding, and found a wealth of information. Apparently, it is a fascinating job. It combines all the adventures of diving with the technically complex duties of a welder. Underwater welding does have its risks, but it pays extremely well. Best of all, you get to work on some fascinating construction projects. They call you in to maintain bridges, dams, and other underwater structures. Working on such mammoth constructions must be pretty interesting, and I bet it really gives you a sense of accomplishment.

I was so impressed by his tales of underwater welding that I started to think about getting into it myself. I have always been interested in the maritime trades, and being an underwater welder seems like a great way to get involved. Underwater welders are called upon to fix ships as well as more permanent structures, so is a great way to get involved in boat work. I haven’t started it yet, but I really am thinking about it.

I have started taking a diving course. I figured that I could get involved in underwater welding if I liked it. So far, the diving course is pretty fun. It is harder work than I had imagined. It can really hurt to dive to low depths, and it can be disorienting when you first start it. Nonetheless, it looks like it will be a great bit of fun to get my commercial diving certificate. After that, who knows. Underwater welding is certainly something I would consider.
